Earth Day

Earth Day is an educational day for visitors to learn about local government agencies and non-profit environmental organizations that are working to make a difference in the greater Heartland area.
Exhibits, presentations, guided nature walks, and children’s activities are featured. Visitors may stop by the Exploration Station and take a leisurely walk on the Cypress Swamp Trail with volunteer trail guides at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. Children may take a Kid’s Discovery Nature Walk on the Wild Orange Trail from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and work on activities to become Junior Rangers following the hike.
Museum curator David Schmidt will examine the shared history and the importance of preservation at Highlands Hammock and Archbold Biological Research Station in his presentation Legacy by Happenstance: The Roeblings and the Archbolds, which is scheduled at 10:00 am in the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum.
Two other featured guest speaker programs in the CCC Museum include an Overview of the Big Cypress National Preserve at 12:00 pm and Updates on the Florida Panther and the Black Bear at 1:30 pm.
Exhibitors and an Alligators in Florida Culture Art Exhibit by middle and high school students from Highlands District Schools are ongoing throughout the day.
