HANDPICKED HIGHLANDS

Cool Way to Celebrate Cool Days in Highlands County

Christmas trees tomorrow, Poul-tree today! Thanksgiving is a family favorite because it's all about counting your blessings, not your carbs! December welcomes several holidays; all celebrating the gift of giving, friends and family! We have a few fun ways for you to experience the holiday weather this year!

Sweater weather is better weather! A stroll through downtown Sebring's famous Circle, this time of year, is nothing short of magical! 2019 is the 33rd year of families joining together for The Carousel of Lights! Young and older alike can spy brightly-lit alligator silhouettes, popping-pink flamingos, traditionally tasty candy-canes, and more!

Every night of December from 6pm-9pm, you can feel the chill and experience the wonder of Christmas!

Or If Christmas has you feeling Santa-mental, the perfect wish on your list could be holiday-themed family photos!  Christmas-lights strung on a palm tree make for a good laugh and its snow easy to do! Sebring's Highlands Hammock offers a variety of landscapes; you'll find the perfect space to place a smile on your face for this year's Christmas card!

It's the most wine-derful time of the year! If you like wining and dining on a cool day, then Faded Bistro is the place for you! If you're more of a picnic person; Highlands County offers several family-friendly parks for your enjoyment! Veteran's Beach along the shore of Sebring's Lake Jackson, Avon Park's Donaldson Park along Lake Verona, and Lake Placid's Lake June Park are all local hot-spots for Florida's short winter-weather fun!

The beloved Avon Park Christmas Parade begins at a cool 7pm on December 2nd! This parade draws a large crowd of all ages! With festive floats hosted by your favorite local businesses, live music provided by the Avon Park High School Band and more; you and your family can participate in a fun and captivating Avon Park tradition!

The  Sebring Christmas Parade and festivities will be snowing-on Friday, December 6th! Joining together for downtown fellowship begins at an early 4:30pm! A special tree lighting ceremony will be held just before the parade begins! Sebring's best businesses, school clubs, and more; will begin parading around the circle at 6:30pm! Our community will give you and your family a memorable evening to remember!

The Lake Placid Christmas Parade is requesting your presence on December 14th, at 7pm! Lake Placid's parade is brought to you by our local artistic businesses, schools and more! People from each side of the county, and every spot in-between travel to witness this fun holiday celebration! You and your family will have a magical night of memories!

If you're a lake-loving Highlands County resident you won't want to miss this year's  5th Annual Boat Parade on December 14th at 7pm! Colorful Christmas lights reflecting on Sebring's Lake Jackson would make a fun start to a family tradition!

Cool days in Highlands County are a rare reminder that Holidays are near! We offer three festively-decorated cities, flavorful treats, and holiday cheer to help you celebrate this year! Don't forget to take an "Elfie" and share that photo with us @#SRundown on Facebook and Instagram!

WEEKEND ROUNDUP

Leap Weekend Roundup!

For February 28-March 1, 2020.

This weekend we will get to celebrate Leap Day! Does your family have any traditions or superstitions surrounding the day or the entire leap year? We’ve read that many cultures believe that leap year and especially leap day are somewhat cursed. In fact, in Italy, they refer to a Leap Year as a gloomy year. They also warn against weddings and other special activities because “Anno bisesto tutte le donne senza sesto”, meaning “in a leap year, women are erratic.” We got a good laugh out of that. We’re still going to go out and have fun all weekend!

Are you an avid lover of Harry Potter? Head down to the library at South Florida State College and represent your house during Hogwarts Colloquium & Celebration! Play games, make crafts, and earn house points! Combine the magical world of Harry Potter with an array of Undergraduate Research. Become immersed in Hogwarts from 9am-4pm on Friday and help your house earn the House Cup!

Fresh and delicious! The Lake Placid Farmers Market is open Saturday from 8am-1:30pm and will have a little of everything you’re looking for! Local Florida produce, artists, fresh food, plants, and music while you’re there!

Are you a DIY extraordinaire? Are you eager to DIY but don’t know where to start? All DIY lovers are welcome at The Grateful Hearts! This Saturday, they’re hosting some Morning Fun! Choose from a variety of projects including signs, centerpiece boxes, photo frames, trays, and so much more. Choose an adorable spring or Easter themed design and customize them for exactly what you want!

Ready for an out of this world show? Blue Jupiter is coming to Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts at South Florida State College Saturday night at 7pm! 4 mouths, 4 mics, and nothing else. Broadway meets a cappella in this stunning show with incredible talent! You won’t want to miss this show!

We hope everyone has a fantastic leap weekend! Take a selfie while you’re out and about and use the tag #SRundown to show us what fun you’ve been up to! Check our calendar HERE for more events throughout the month!
